Local Attractions

The National Museum of Computing: (Informal tour available thanks to John, G3WGV)

The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) exhibits all the technical aspects of the Bletchley Park World War II code-breaking work, including the Bombe (Enigma) and Colossus (Lorentz) systems. It tells the story of code-breaking and puts it in the context of the post war computer revolution. Early post war exhibits include the EDSAC and WITCH computers. Most of these early exhibits are in working order. From these early days the development of computing through to the present day is there for you to explore.

TNMOC is at Bletchley Park but it is a separate attraction: you do not need a ticket for Bletchley Park. At the park entrance, if asked, tell security that you are going to the computer museum. Follow the road round to the left, up the hill and beyond the roundabout. TNMOC is directly in front of you. The entrance fee is just £7.50 (£5.00 for over 60’s) and the museum is open from 10.30 am.

TNMOC has enough to keep your interest for several hours, if not all day. Many people make the mistake of trying to do Bletchley Park and TNMOC in one day only to find that they miss much of what is on offer. TNMOC is the place to go if you want to explore the technical side of WW-II code-breaking.

John, G3WGV is a volunteer at TNMOC and will be happy to offer informal tours. Contact him at johnl@g3wgv.com if you are interested. Alternatively, you are of course welcome to explore on your own. You’ll most likely find John at the Air Traffic Control exhibit.
